The East Palace

Opinion: I think I jumped to conclusions, assuming it would be a drama with a lot of horror, and even though it’s categorized as horror on Netflix, it’s actually a dark fantasy drama. Putting my preconceptions aside, once you get into the story, it becomes a great way to pass the time, with a plot that hooks you and makes you want to know what terrible thing happened in that palace to make it so haunted. However, for me, once you find out what happened, it’s no longer fun to follow the story. I didn’t form a strong enough bond with the characters to want to rewatch the series. I think the excellent mystery and action scenes carry the drama, and that’s why I made it all the way to the end.

Final thoughts that may contain spoilers: I think it’s a great drama to watch just once. It’s very short and easy to binge-watch. The drama and the resolution of the mystery make it worth it, and the ending—which leaves a cliffhanger for a next season—makes me want to know more about the series’ universe, especially about the consequences of the protagonist becoming an ak-gwi.
